What can you expect during a typical morning service at Calvary?
When you attend one of our morning services, you can expect to find us reading the Word of God, praying based on the Word of God, singing songs that are based on the Word of God, teaching the Word of God verse by verse, and reflecting on the Word of God after the teaching times. In other words, we want our services to be saturated with God and His Word. For this we make no apologies.
What kind of music does Calvary use?
The musical aspect of our congregational gatherings is governed by the New Testament teaching on music, primarily the expression "teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs". We seek to find an appropriate balance of these three types of music.
Normally Calvary does not incorporate "special music" in its services. Rather, we believe the New Testament indicates music to be a corporate activity, rather than individuals or small groups.
We accompany our singing with a piano and electronic keyboard (and Pastor Phil's trumpet ).
The music style of Calvary would probably be considered conservative, though we try to incorporate newer songs that present sound theology and appropriate music.
What is the teaching like at Calvary?
The normal teaching at Calvary consists of reading and explaining the Word of God verse by verse throughout a particular book of the Bible. Occasionally we will address a specific topic or theme based upon Biblical principles. The focus in our teaching is to explain God as He reveals Himself in the passage to be looked at that morning. Practical application is pursued throughout the teaching, but more deliberately at the end of each sermon.
The normal Sunday morning sermons are about 45 minutes in length. People of all ages (including children) are able to follow the teaching by our elders. Time is provided following the teaching for personal meditation and reflection on what has been taught. After the service, our elders make themselves available to answer any questions regarding that morning's teaching.
